Match Preview: Cardiff City v Briton Ferry Llansawel

Briton Ferry Llansawel will today face Adran Premier Champions Cardiff City at Cardiff City Stadium. 


With both sides assured of their positions the result will not impact the table but the host’s will be looking to claim a victory prior to be awarded the Adran Premier trophy.  The Reds will also be wanting to get the win to finish off their history making season on a high.  Ferry’s second place being the highest ever finish for the club. 


With the title won Reds manager Rhys James offered his congratulations to the Bluebirds,


“Firstly, I would like to give my congratulations to Cardiff City on another excellent season and they are deserved champions, credit to all staff and players!”


The two sides have shared some fantastic games this season with both clubs having one win apiece and one draw. 

The first meeting saw a thrilling 2-2 draw at Cardiff International Sports Stadium.  Lowri Ridings and Alison Witts sending the Reds two up but Cardiff came back with Eliza Collie pulling a goal back with 11 minutes to go.  It was Collie who then rescued a point for Cardiff with an equaliser in the 93rd minute.


The next meeting at The Renewable Centre Stadium saw Maia Owen put the Reds ahead.  Ffion Price levelled the game in first half added time but two second half goals from Lucy Powell gave Ferry the win.


In their last meeting two first half goals from Price and Mackenzie Olden gave the Bluebirds a vital win in the title race.


Rhys James shared his reflections on the meetings this season with Cardiff City.


“Each game against Cardiff this season has been an enjoyable one and learning curves for the team.


“I was really proud of our performance in the first two fixtures but we felt we let ourselves down in the previous one.


“We expect them to be buzzing off their title win and wanting to put on a show for their fans, we are there to try celebrate our own success and put on a performance our fans can enjoy.


“I'm expecting a very good game between two of the best sides in the league”


Cardiff’s last match at Cardiff City Stadium saw them beat The New Saints 2-0.  After a goalless first half Lias Owen put the Bluebirds ahead after 50 minutes.  Laura Curnock added the second with three minutes to go. 


The Reds have shown what they can do when playing at bigger stadiums after a 3-1 win over Wrexham at Stok Cae Ras.  Tija Richardson, Jade Crofts and Laura-May Walkley with the goals for the Reds. 


 Todays game will give the Ferry team the chance to gain another famous victory with Rhys James saying,


“Sunday is another fantastic opportunity for these players to showcase what they can do in a big stadium.


“These opportunities are ones we will have in our memories for years to come.


“We are looking for a similar performance to our win away at Wrexham at the racecourse.


“We need to show that fight and togetherness to come away with something Sunday.


“Cardiff were very good in our last game and we are keen to rectify our performance there and be better.


“Everyone saw the spirit of the group when we won away to Wrexham, and it would mean the world to them if we could do that again.”
