Cardiff City 2-2 Briton Ferry Llansawel: Late strike denies Reds three points

Briton Ferry were forced to share the points with Cardiff City after a goal rescued a point for the champions against the league leaders.


The first half began as a tense affair as the teams tried to settle.  The Reds restricted the chances for Cardiff and had many of their own.  Lucy Powell missed the chance from the spot to pout the Reds ahead but Lowri Ridings headed the league leaders ahead before half time.  City finished the half strong and they a two good chances to level though Shannon Evans and Eliza Collie.

The second half saw Cardiff push forward more and look for an equalising goal. Ferry though added a second after 63 minutes thanks to Alison Witts. The host's got one back in the 79 minute from Eliza Collie. The Reds kept the hosts out but in added time Collie scored the equaliser as City rescued a point.


The Reds stay top of the Genaro Adran Premier ahead of four clubs by one point and are the only unbeaten side in the league.

 

Cardiff had an early chance to test Charlotte Merry in goal from a Ffion Price corner.  Merry pushed the ball from the six yard box and Fleur Jenkins then helped clear the danger.


Walkley earned the best a free kick as she drew a foul.  Alison Witts tested the City keeper who had to tip her effort over the bar.


Fleur Jenkins sent Lucy Powell away down the left and Powell put a testing ball across the box.  Maia Owen was running in and almost got on the end of it.


Walkley was then brought down in the box giving the Reds a Penalty.  Lucy Powell went to the right but Ceryn Chamberlain did too and saved.


Cardiff almost had a chance when they broke though but Brooke Llewellyn got back to guide the ball out of play.


The Reds took the lead as Lucy Powell sent a corner right into the six yard box.  In a crowd of players Lowri Ridings headed in from close range. 


Into first half stoppage time and Shannon Evans went closet for the Bluebirds heading over from Ffion Price’s corner.  Moments later and Eliza Collie headed just over as City pushed forward.

The Reds had a great chance to make it 2-0 shortly after the half started.  A good piece of play saw Walkley play the ball into the path of Tija Richardson but she dragged her shot just wide of the goal.


Cardiff then had a chance as they worked the ball into Eliza Collie but her shot form the edge of the box wide of the target.


Alison Witts hit a shot on the turn but it was blocked for a corner.  Shortly after she tried from distance but put her effort over the bar. 


 Walkley then made her way into the box and after dribbling past three defenders found Alison Witts.  Witts took a shot at goal but the keeper saved.

Witts was not to be denied as she put the Reds two up.  A loose pass from the back by Cardiff allowed Witts to link up with Walkley who couldn’t get her own shot off but found Witts in space who fired home.


With 12 minutes left Cardiff had a way back in when Eliza Collie scored from close range to make it 2-1.


Ferry defended relentlessly to keep Cardiff out as they threw everything at the Ferry goal and in added time Collie got her second to save a drew for Cardiff.
